We accept any used or clean Children's or Youth's books or magazines in Korean, Korean

2011 Donghwa: East Meets West International Essay Competition

Topics (Select 1):
- Discuss your interest in Korean/Asian traditional/ popular culture and analyze its impact on your cultural awareness of other countries.
- Discuss the effect of Eastern Culture on Western Culture and explore how each has engaged each other and the resulting transformations in the 20th Century and their impact on the 21st Century.
- Discuss your cultural identity and how that has affected your involvement in your community and your understanding of Korean culture.
Division:
- High School grades 9th (including incoming 9th grade in fall, 2011) -12th
- College/University (including senior in spring, 2011)
Qualifications:
- All High school and Undergraduate students whose nationality is not Korean or who is permanent resident outside of Korea
- School standing requirement (proof of enrollment)
- The candidates for award recipients will be requested to submit all necessary documents to prove their qualifications.

Essay Requirements:
- Essay must be written in English, typed double space with 12 points Times New Roman or an equivalent font sizes. Margins should be one inch all sides.
- Essay must be minimum 800- maximum1000 words for high school students and minimum 1200 – maximum 1500 words for undergraduate students.
- Type the number of the chosen topic on the top of the essay. However, do not type contestant name throughout the essay (including the essay content).
- The contestant's entry form and essay must be submitted electronically by 17:00 p.m.(Eastern Time) on June 25th , 2011. Those who submit outside of the USA must send their entry form and essay by 17:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on July 9th, 2011.
Entry Deadline:
All submissions must be emailed by June 25th 2011 to donghwa.essay@gmail.com. All international submissions (outside of the USA) must be emailed by July 9th 2011 to donghwa.essay@gmail.com.
Announcement of winners: Monday, August 15th 2011
Award Ceremony at Donghwa: Saturday, August 27th, 2011
Prizes:
- One Grand Prize: A round trip air ticket to Korea and an accommodation in Seoul, Korea
- Two Gold /Silver/ Bronze Prizes from each High School and Undergraduates: scholarship
- Special Awards: Consulate General Award, The Korean Daily Award, University of Pittsburgh Award
There will be also an opportunity of posting works at Donghwa's web site and publishing at local news papers.

Participants: All American Children from 1st to 12th grade and college students
Division: Calligraphy (10:00-11:00 am),
Asian Brush Painting (11:15 am-12:15 pm)

Maedup Workshop (Korean Traditional Knotting)!
Donghwa had a Spring Special Workshop that introduces Korean knotting - Maedup. Ms. Kyungwon Lee, who is on the faculty of Donghwa and is also a Maedup researcher, is going to teach how to make the Dragonfly Maedup, among 33 other traditional knotting skills.

Let's Learn Korean with Drama Making!
Donghwa 2010 Korean Language Program starts on January 16th (Saturday) at 10:00 AM
Level: Beginner (3-6yrs, and 7-11yrs) and Intermediate
On every Saturday from 10am to 12pm starting on the 16thth of January, Donghwa offers 2-hour Korean Language class for all levels. This class designed for children from pre-K to K12 to learn Korean Language with unique teaching applications from Drama/Acting to make a class more interesting and effective. During first hour class, you will learn the vocabulary, grammar and conversation whereas you, on the second hour class, will play acting/drama games or make a group drama to practice contents, which you learned in the earlier class. Early registration is required. Please let us know if you are interested in any programs at Donghwa. Instructors for the Korean language class are all bi-lingual certified teachers, including Ms. Oh Yoon who is specialized in Drama acting and making and Ms. Banya Cho who is specialized in both Korean and Chinese Characters.
Donghwa Cultural Foundation, Inc starts its spring 2010 semester program on the 11th of January with interesting programs, including Calligraphy, Brush Painting, Korean Painting, Korean Music (Kayageum and Janggo), Korean Dance, Korean traditional knotting, Chinese Characters, Paper Folding, Korean Chess, Abacus and Korean Language for children and adults.
